Keep your sponge dry and mildew free

DYB Tip 117

How to keep your sponge dry and mildew free? Once you’ve cleaned your dirty counter, sink and stains on the floor, it might be tempting to just run your sponge under some water and set it at the edge of your sink. Doing so, however, sets the stage for mold and mildew to build up. Thankfully, you can keep your sponge from becoming gross and unusable with a simple clip. Just place the sponge upright which will prevent it from sitting in water as well as help it air dry fast.

DYB Tip 115

Straighten your knife easily!

DYB Tip 114

Your knives are never sharp? Typically the problem with knives isn’t that they’re not sharp — it’s that they’re not straight. You can easily straighten your knife with the bottom of a ceramic bowl or cup, running the blade against the rough portion to straighten it. Take care of your knives, too — straighten regularly, bring to a sharpener every six months or so, and don’t store them directly in a drawer (use a knife block or magnetic strip, or buy knife guards).

DYB Tip 112

Clean your microwave easily. Clean a crusty microwave with a soaked sponge (and sanitize a sponge this same way). Soak a sponge in water and cook in microwave for one minute. Careful, it will be too hot to handle with bare hands. The moisture will loosen grime on your microwave and make it easier to clean. To sanitize a yucky sponge, soak it in water and vinegar and microwave for one minute.
